My image skills are laughable, to say the least, and a newborn baby could have done a much better job with the graphics here than I did. But I hope you'll all be patient with me, because I am all but helpless in the face of Photoshop.

Valentine's Day is just a little bit more than a week away, so in honor of the occasion, we're having a huge Valentine's Day giveaway! And it's all sponsored by the good people at Hoopla, My Favorite Mirror, and Untamed Menagerie.

So here's the stats: Write a short poem in the comments using one of the sponsors' names as part of the poem. It can be a haiku, a limerick, free verse, gibberish, absolutely anything. It doesn't have to rhyme. An example, in haiku form:

My comical life
An untamed menagerie
Of misconceptions.

I'll choose three winners randomly from all the comments. The first chosen will be the grand prize winner, who will win a Valentine's Day package containing a Melancholy Lashes necklace (shown above) as well as a Jet Blossom necklace, both from Untamed Menagerie, a set of My Punny Valentine cards and a Forever Bouquet from Hoopla, and two pocket mirrors from the My Funny Valentine collection over at My Favorite Mirror. The second place winner will win a Curiouser & Curiouser necklace (in black) from Untamed Menagerie, a set of Kit-A-Loons and the Male Pattern Baldness Mini-Poster (which is kind of amazing) from Hoopla, and two of the My Funny Valentine pocket mirrors from My Favorite Mirror. Third prize is one My Funny Valentine pocket mirror and an assortment of adorable, vintage-style Curious Cards from Hoopla.

So now, with any luck, your worries about what to give to your Valentine this year are over! Especially if your Valentine is you. Because I'd be keeping this stuff for myself if I won, personally.

I'll be ending the contest this Sunday so I can ship the prizes out by Monday! A special thank you again to the people at Hoopla, My Favorite Mirror, and Untamed Menagerie, because I think this will be loads of fun!

(PS--The specific pocket mirrors will be chosen by me, but I will do my best to work with each contest winner so that everyone is happy. I'm not a miracle worker, but I'll try!).

(UPDATE: Contest is now over--I'll be announcing the winners soon! Thanks to all who entered!)

I'll admit to being quite vexed
when first I laid eyes on this text!
There was hoopla and fuss,
'cause my thoughts were a muss,
But oh fuck it, they're never indexed.

On Saturday mornings
my favourite mirror
is the one I can't see.

(I should probably just leave poetry alone.)

MY

Favorite mirror
Shows me the inside not out
I see the real me

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Untamed Menagerie is awesome
and so are you!!

Holding my favorite mirror,
I see a primped and proper exterior.
When I veer my eyes away,
Feelings of self-love has gone astray.

I keep my emotions in with stoic smiles,
Repressions eating at me all the while.
Until the day I set the free,
Like a lost garden of untamed menagerie.

(Sorry, if it sounds depressing. There's really a light at the end of the tunnel, I swear. =)...)

My favorite mirror
shows me things
in error
I see what I'd like to see
and I am what I'd like to be
Gadzooks!
My mirror has been broken again!

My favorite mirrors are your warm eyes,
framed by cider
swirled with flecks of cinnamon,
dusting my nose with a spicy tingle.
Autumn cuts through the air with unparalleled crispness,
so lay back with me to feel our hair grow heavy with pollen.

I see precipices
unclean edges
shards and spines
broken lines
and tired eyes

i look to streams
to glass and dreams
to find this girl
to trap her and reveal her
but what you see is heavenly
you are my favorite mirror

love all this hoopla
my favorite mirror tells
who the fairest is

Posted by: akua at February 5, 2009 06:35 PM

limerick hoopla
a sundial birdwing
a simmering mind-chime
that boils at morning

pedestal bursting
with granite aggression
an untamed menagerie
is inching through dust

Millicent's fever
is a signal receiver
with sparklets of sweat
on her lace-bordered bust

her conductivity
was bright with lucidity
in dreams she swung giddily
on tropical gusts

When 18, I turned

--still young and glorious

and naive, unlearned

and very much explorious

I left my mom, dad,

my sisters two

I left all I had

grown very used to

My favorite mirror

tucked in my case

universe city, still nearer

I quicken my pace

I entered the city,

grandeur, tall, and grey

not taking any pity

on a girl with no way

I turn a corner and

hear a hoopla--O, what a crowd!

dozens surround a stand

with a small man in a shroud

His hands raised, turning 'round,

he made the crowd commoted!

"Down with Universe City! Down!

There are other ways to be promoted!

Sheep, we'll no more be!

We're more diverse than you know!

We are an untamed menagerie,

we'll no more play in your circus show!"

I listen to the roars,

the cries, the wails, "Universe City,

Universe-City, University no mores!"

and the realization just hit me!

I don't need a 'city to

be happy, be great! and be learned,

this may be for you, or you,

but for this place I have not yearned!

I refuse these obligations,

for not everyone is the same.

We are taught self-limitations,

and only ourselves are to blame!

I am not ready for commitment,

adventure's what I need!

Universe City, no offense meant,

but it's my life, and I will lead.

Oh jeez, I'm sorry that was spaced out so much! The preview didn't look nearly as silly!

What is this hoopla
surrounding my favorite mirror?
It shows nothing but my hair,
an untamed menagerie.

All this hoopla, all this chaos
All the people rushing through the crowded streets
of the crowded world

All the world, all the dance
All dreaming and the fighting and the
sighing and you

I see your reflection in my favorite mirror
(Given to me by my great-aunt,
on the event of
something
that I don't remember)

You and your beast-like coterie
An untamed menagerie

A hula-hoopla winds around the ladycham
walking through the crisp clean air.

She stumble-tumbles, over leaves and under clouds, falling across the giant so rare.

Hilfen-freude paining me I stretch out my hand.

Smiling sadly in defeat the lady looks grand.

Hi Charissa - I realised that I forgot to include a sponsor in my original poem; can you consider this my entry please? Thanks!

i couldn't find her
not amongst all the hoopla
hidden in my heart
