I just befriended the fabulous Icelandic singer Hera, who I've just fallen madly in love with and we are running away together to make tiny, tiny babies. I haven't brought this up to her yet, but I'm positive she feels the same way. You can catch her in all of her Icelandic splendidness (I swear those people breed with fairies-- everyone there is magically cute) at SXSW. If you're gonna be in town drop by-- more details about her SXSW gig here, or you can catch her at her site / MySpace.
Nearly 10 minutes of pure rock and roll bliss. Behold: the "sideways soul" of Calvin Johnson (Beat Happening, Halo Benders) and Jon Spencer (Blues Explosion.) Just listen.
Admittedly, I had never heard of Amy Winehouse until Jewlie posted about her a few days ago. Since then I have developed a tiny obsession with her voice, and have bought her album and read interviews and found live footage. She's just won Best Female Solo Artist in the Brit Awards and her music is infectious. (I can't stop singing it. It's been on repeat in my mouth for days.) So here's a video from Spinner by way of the always inspirational Achtung, Baby! and a few songs to keep your swank on.
Our lovely friends at Oddica have come out with a new line of tees and a new March sale to go with it! Three shirts for $16 each, and don't forget to check out their art magazine, chock full of arty goodies by the underground.
In the long line of wonderful toast related items comes the Hello Kitty toaster, which lavishes an adornment of Hello Kittyness to every slice of yummy toast to sate your toasty palate. And, which gives me a good segue to introduce Hello Cthulu, a webcomic about Hello Kitty, Cthulu, and well, toast:
Never trust a mermaid, or, alternately, some women are just worth drowning for: new video from our beloved Michael Leviton. (High quality video here and more yummy Leviton here. Which, it seems, is giving ukelele lessons if you're lucky enough to live in New York.)
Sorry to jump on the Amy Winehouse train so late, but at least I'm on it. What a voice on this one. Quality, catchy, old school Motown soul. And she's touring the states soon! Amy, I will buy you a beer in Los Angeles. Forget rehab.
People give me piles of music: the Fabulist mailbox is flooded with various albums of things, to the effect of Jewlie and I looking like Scrooge McDuck, coasting down hills of golden cds going "wheeee!" So sometimes I miss things. I have no idea how long this Smiths' cover has been sitting in my iTunes, but it randomly came up today, and it's beautiful and sad. More about the band here.
Bryce Wymer has multiple art personality disorder, and I approve. His style is all over the place, and changes medium just as often: from design to illustration to motion graphics. I really dig the Orwellian Holiday record packaging-- I wish that more mail looked like that!
Sorry it's so loud on the site today-- it's merely the clamor of me going I-want-I-want-I-want after seeing this lovely new lighting fixture. (It would go well in my secret bunker.)
From the website:
"Reveal is a new type of ambient interior lighting.
This product creates the impression of sunlight streaming through a window and onto an interior wall.
A light breeze appears to move through trees in the cast image. This work has patents pending.
Reveal will be available for purchase in April 2007. "
