BY LAND OF MUSIC

Lainey D. just dropped me a line and introduced me to Duke Special-- here's some video of him performing on Jools Holland.

Duke Special is a lot like a lover toying with my heart-- when I decide to walk away, he does something magical to keep me turning back to him in wonder. And, well, he's Irish. Those accents will do you in every time.

Listening to his music, it will start to get too poppy for me, or his lyrics will sometimes not be all that I'd wish, and then suddenly these amazing strains of gypsy-jazz music float in, or he lets loose these choruses that are just bleeding hope.

Go check out the dread-headed little poet with black eyeliner at his site or MySpace. And here are a few songs so you can decide exactly what *your* special relationship to Mr. Special is. (And hey, let me know what you think.)

Duke Special - Portrait

Duke Special - Freewheel

Duke Special - Ballad of a Broken Man

I would add that, from what I’ve listened to so far, he’s a guilty pleasure listen. Like, you like the music, you know you like the music, and it is Indie Rock Cool…but do you really want to admit you like it? Doesn’t matter, his album is not on my list to purchase.
