Whoever did the marketing for the new Regina Spektor album did something brilliant. Each LP comes packaged with a second disc, labeled "Side A" of the album, with a note to give it to a friend. It contains the first six songs of the regular album, and whoever you are out there, I commend you. More bands should do this, please, if for no other reason than most people find out about new music from other people. The nature of music is to be shared, and this is a brilliant way to do it.
I loved Regina's Us (watch the video) from her debut Soviet Kitsch... but try as I might, the rest of the album wouldn't grow on me. Begin To Hope is a different story. From the producers of The Strokes, each song has enough of Miss Regina's very quirky vocals to remember why you liked her in the first place, but now they are sitting inside of much tighter songs. I liked the album so much I bought it twice. (Not joking. Make sure you get the limited edition LP with the bonus tracks the first time around.)
She also sings in Russian. Come on. Russian! Undeniably sexy. Listen to an interview with Regina Spektor on NPR, or please go buy her album, because I had way too much trouble picking which songs to post. They're all fantastic.
