How many people must be in a “band before it becomes
a “collective? Is Broken Social Scene still
considered a band? What about The Polyphonic Spree?
I’m only asking because I don’t know what to call the
8 piece band/ collective Margot & the Nuclear So &
So's. Because I talk about them a lot and I want to
get it right. When I want to tell people what my
favorite song of 2006 is, theirs is the name that
always comes up and I assume it will until December.
It’s mostly about the opening lines of the song
“Skeleton Key. “I did a sick sick thing to my love.
Pretty much all the lines after it have the same
effect on me. Ok, Ok maybe it’s because I went through
a horrible break up this year but that doesn’t explain
why I get giddy at the sound of them. What’s special
about MNSS is that they are highly literate but it’s
still very much pop music. It doesn't matter if you’re
a casual music fan or a complete geek. Their songs
seem to float in the air yet somehow live on the
ground. For proof listen to “Paper Kitten Nightmare
In which Richard Edwards actually meows. Or maybe “Jen
is Bringing the Drugs which is basically an open love
letter to... well, drugs. It even earned an Explicit
sticker. I guess nothing really explains it better
than listening. You can hear more at their MySpace page.

I cannot say enough good things about this album, to as many people as possible. Keep spreading the word!
d.
(ps. for my money, Quiet As A Mouse and Dress Me Like A Clown are the top songs after Skeleton Key.)
