I went to see Belle and Sebastian at the Hollywood Bowl last night, and it was, hands down, the best show I have ever attended. They only played about 3 songs off of "Life Pursuit" and "Dear Catastrophe Waitress" (though those are both good albums, there ain't nuthin' like hearing the old stuff). I wish I had brought a pen to write down the set list, but I'm sure it will pop up somewhere on the internets soon. Regardless, they opened with "I Fought In A War" and closed the encore with "Boy With The Arab Strap", and it was perfect. Being backed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic was a brilliant idea, and they made B&S sound as full and beautiful as I always imagined they would. I've been waiting to see this band for 5 years, and the wait and the ticket price were both completely worth it. The musicians all left the stage at 10:30pm, and those of us that were up front dancing in the isles stayed put. When Belle and Sebastian came back on for their encore songs, there was a moment where all of us just decided it would be a good idea to rush the stage. At the Hollywood Bowl. My friend and I were on top of divider that separates the garden boxes with the pool circle tables. There were kids on the stage, kids dancing with Stuart on the catwalk, kids in front of the stage....it was extraordinary. It was hundreds of fans just wanting to be close to a band that they love, and it was beautiful. Security was completely baffled and freaking out, but as far as I could tell no one got hurt or anything. Typing this out has made me excited about last night all over again; I'm going to have show afterglow for awhile. If anyone has pictures from the madness, please let me know. Here are some songs that they played last night, in roughly the same order they were played. Enjoy. Wish you could've been there.
