I have yet to do a Fabulist entry devoted solely to The Mountain Goats, which is a bit strange, considering they're my favorite band (and I have a bit of an unnatural obsession). There are a few reasons for this, I think. Firstly, I feel that if I try and evaluate or explain John Darnielle's music, I would hardly do it justice. Secondly, the only approach to writing I have is from the perspective of a fan as opposed to a critic, and no one really likes to read sugary sweet, gushy, ass kissing lectures. Thirdly, I have 4 gigs of songs to go through to try and figure out which to post. However, I saw The 'Goats last night, and it inspired me to give it a go.
The way I see it, there's no grey area in listening to The Mountain Goats. You either love Darnielle's intense, warbling vocals and literary, sometimes heartbreaking lyrics, or you don't. I consider myself somewhat of a missionary in the Church of TMG and heap songs and albums upon any one who'll listen, and rarely does someone come back to me not loving what they've heard.
As for the show last night, poor John was sick and played barefoot and feverish. There were lots of new songs and only two encore songs, the last of which being "Best Ever Death Metal Band In Denton", which I hadn't gotten to see live before. He also did a cover of Franklin Bruno’s “Houseguest which was more than fantastic. Since John couldn't really holler as he usually does, we the audience sang "No Children" for him, which was quite the experience.
So, here are some live tracks from throughout the years. I hope they show at least some of you why I got all misty eyed like a little schoolgirl when they took the stage last night.
