So I don't really read comic books. (The last time I said this in front of Jewlie, she laughed, and pointed out I had read x, and y, and z, and that definitely meant I did read comics.)

Hm. How about: I don't really read typical comic books. I love the idea of comic books, but in practice, most things aren't my taste. So here's a reading list for your sunny Memorial Day afternoon, when you're lounging in the shade at your friend's barbecue. If you're the sort who doesn't read comics.

In no particular order:

1. Blankets by Craig Thompson
2. A Tale of One Bad Rat by Brian Talbot
3. Endless Nights by Neil Gaiman
4. It's A Bird by Steven E. Seagle
5. The Fountain by Darren Aronofsky & Kent Williams
6. Flight Volume One by a lot of people
7. Good-bye, Chunky Rice by Craig Thompson
8. Tricked by Alex Robinson

If you liked Craig Thompson, I'd strongly recommend checking out Jeffrey Brown's "Clumsy". It is also published by Tom Shelf comics and is absolutely beautiful... maybe not to look at, but the story will break your heart.
