First of all, I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday.

Second of all, it's that time of year again--New Year's Resolution time. So I want to know everyone's resolutions this year, specifically as it pertains to music, painting, writing, ceramics, sculptural welding, and all that good stuff. How are you going to bring more art into your life this year? Are you finally going to write that sonata for the pan flute you've been talking about for years? Or take that Chinese calligraphy class? Or make a donation to your local mime troupe? I need to know, my friends!

Please leave your comment after the beep (complete with email address!), and one winner will be chosen at random (because who am I to judge?) to win this exclusive hand screened print by Freddi C. for a Paper Tiger. And you can hang it on your wall the whole year long, to remind you to create, create, create!

(A huge, HUGE thank you to a Paper Tiger for making this possible, and for inspiring us all with their continuing dedication to offer awesome, affordable art! We love you guys!)

I'm going to turn my life into a gigantic word.

Then live my life according to that word.

Then translate the word into five different languages and take voice samples of people saying the word.

Then put those voice samples into a song which is the inspiration for a book that I'll write.

Hopefully someone will buy out the rights for the book so it can be turned into a movie.

I am going to learn how to take good black and white pictures, and make all my female friends pose (clothed!).

I plan to give up struggling to be someone I'm not in an industry where I would be half-assed at best, and pursue my purpose in creative arts where I can be who I am and half-assed at best... but at least happy :) Draw, draw, draw, draw, oh, and draw.

I'm going to stop fucking around and start making little clay figurines with a vengeance, for every occasion and all the in-betweens, just in case.

I'm going to learn to speak animalese, and then I am going to take what all the animals are saying and write the bestest, awesomest screenplay ever and donate all of the money to animal causes.

I am going to do more magic. Learn to play guitar passably enough for the stage*. Finish the novel (Chant of the Sibyl - almost there!). Edit... the novel (fortherestofmygoddamnlife). Submit Unbroken Thread (short story) for publication. Waste less (NO!) time on people who do not value me. Breathe life into my writers' community. And do more magic.

I am going to compliment people more! Everyone deserves to feel lovely :)

I resolve to turn the art cove in my bookstore into a word of mouth hotspot where locals can find the newest and freshest collections of contemporary zing, rather than its current status as a dump for off-size photo books. Any suggestions on what I should order? ISBNs are helpful.

James ~ Hey! Not sure if you're looking for art books, comic books, graphic novels, or something altogether different, but I did some searching and found:

https://www.upperplaygroundstore.com/catalog/list/product_type_158/books_and_film_178/clear/all

http://secure.giantrobot.com/store.php?catid=I004

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1897299354/robotjohnnyco-20

http://boingboing.net/2008/11/29/boing-boings-holiday-3.html

Hope that's at least somewhat helpful, sorry I don't have any ISBNs :(

I am loving everyone's resolutions, by the way! Keep 'em coming.:)

i am going to make my world bigger ... and bring whoever is open to it along for the ride!

i am going to take things slower, really hear what people are saying, be gentle with my responses.

i'm going to continue to work at letting go of things that are not good for me.

i'm going to keep on smiling.

i am going to learn how to properly use my fancy camera, and hopefully take much better pictures as a result..

Happy New Year, all!

Posted by: dreadpiraterach at December 31, 2008 06:26 AM

I want to take my camera into Chicago and take those photographs of my city that I've always wanted to take.

Posted by: joshexclamation at December 31, 2008 07:33 AM

I am going to accomplish all of the little things I write on my many "to do" lists. I will then feel better about myself and (hopefully) procrastinate less!

Posted by: lisa at December 31, 2008 11:05 AM

I'm not usually into new year's resolutions and all (they just seem like a setup for failure). However, I have been meaning to buckle down and start making art again (something, anything!) as most of my existing examples are laughable, and an art-less existence is so dull. We've also just moved into a hovel with which I have full artistic license, so I think I'll be learning the ins and outs of interior design. Scary, but hopefully worthwhile.

I'm also planning on doing some book learnin' about design in general - I know what makes for good or bad design when I see it, but I can't articulate HOW so I can't easily do it myself. That needs to change.
