This is the sexiest thing I've seen in a while. Scabal makes fabric and suits, and their latest offering is a collection of fabrics called Private Line. Why is this so sexy? The pinstripe fabric is printed with custom text that forms the tiny stripes on the fabric.

You could wear a suit with what you really think about your boss in microprint. There's no limit to the length of the text-- you could have your favorite book printed on a suit. Or, as the site itself so cleverly suggests, you could wear a suit that advertised "if you can read this, you are standing far too close." Clever and sexy, just the way I like 'em.

Nucleus Gallery is having a showing of work by Mari Inukai and Tonohime (which I believe is joint work by Mari & Kent Williams). Bring a copy of the flyer and get some some cute buttons that Mari designed especially for the show.

From the Nucleus site: "Syunga", literally translated is "the paintings of spring". Syunga is one kind of UKIYOE, originated from the 17th century , which depicts the love life of the Japanese male and female as inspiration for many artists throughout history and around the world. Influenced by this celebration of life and love Mari Inukai has created a body of work displaying her talents in oil, watercolor, drawings, mixed media and even ceramic toys. Sexy and cute, her work combines contemporary figure painting with flat animated creatures and elements. In our upstairs gallery space, we will be featuring the work of "Tonomime" an alias for the collaboration of Mari and Kent Williams as one creative force. In her own words, she attempts to "break the wall between imagination and sleep - as if to ask do you really know when you are you awake or asleep?"

It ain't pretty, but if you've spent any amount of time driving (read: parking) in Los Angeles, you know that parking tickets have become a staple in fueling the city economy. The meter maids here have night vision goggles and super-hearing, attuned to the click when a meter hits 0:00.

This little gadget will aid you in the fight against the meter maids. Store your quarters, set your meter alarm. Take back the night.

NOTCOT came up with this very cute tee shirt design-- and they're doing a limited run based on your orders. I'm forever doodling on the margins of everything, like some sort of compulsive-doodling-type-person. So this holds a special place in my heart.

Due to technical difficulties, the Fabulist has been away on extended nap. I blame the rain in LA. When the weather goes wonky in LA it leads to flooding and mudslides. Somehow earthquakes always manage to slide in under the door as well, because LA is a bit of a drama queen. Adds to that apocalyptic je ne sais quoi.

But we're back. And in honor of the rain, here is something sickeningly cute.

This was my first year at South by Southwest. It was absolutely amazing. "Hipster Mardis Gras" was how I picture heaven to be: the beer flowed like water, there were at least 5 good bands playing at any given time, and the weather was perfect. I tended to avoid anything where there was a big line, so it was lucky that I happened to get myself on the list for South by Stereogum, the blog's private party. It was air conditioned, not at all crowded, and drink tickets abounded.

The opening bands were fair to great. Thunderbirds Are Now! were one of the most energetic bands I saw all week, the Rapture were okay (better on the album). But then Ted Leo played. I am a Ted Leo fan. A big one. I'd seen him live once before and, even though this was a short set, I'd say it was even better than the full shown I'd seen, plus my Polaroid and I got to be pressed right up against the stage. Swoon.

Ted Leo and the Pharmacists' blend of punk-influenced rock and catchy melodic pop make their sound completely irresistible and enjoyable to everyone I've had listen to them. Enjoy the music and the snapshots.

Ted Leo/Pharmacists - Timorous Me (from Tyranny of Distance)

Ted Leo/Pharmacists - High Party (from Hearts of Oak)

Ted Leo/Pharmacists - Me and Mia (from Shake the Streets; my favorite TL/RX song)

Ted Leo/Pharmacists - Army Bound (new song)

Chisel - Red Haired Mary (from 8 AM All Day; Chisel is Ted Leo's old band from DC)

This pop-up video by The Sad Little Stars was made for $500 over the course of a year.. and it's one of the cutest things I've seen. The only thing that makes me sad is that it's not longer. Here are the lyrics:

Don't fuck with love
Don't lead her on and think that's enough
So you think you're pretty tough
Don't fuck with love

Don't believe a thing they say
Don't let Johnny Mathis lead you astray
She makes a waste of the stars above
Don't fuck with love

Buy her rings and violets
Treat her like gold and you'll see what you get
First it may come as a gas
Till cupid that bitch puts a cap in your ass
Don't fuck with love*

*The lyrics expressed here do not necessarily reflect the views of the Olga, or the Fabulist. We think cupid's a nice guy, and he sends us a Christmas card every year.

Another from the books in Britain... Britain Tate has come up with another way of viewing their art collection online. Think of it as mix tapes, but for paintings. Just had a breakup? A little Lady of Shalott might do you good. Love odd faces? Animal Freak? The Tate has the collection just for you. Or, you can make your own remix and send it to a friend. Kinda brilliant.

I Am 8 Bit features artwork inspired by videogame-landia. Last year's show was so popular they're doing it again, and with a coffee table book to boot. This year's version takes place at Gallery 1988 and has an opening and closing party. More details here, or visit the 8 bit website here.

From the land of kitsch. It's a telephone booth. It's a cell phone. It's red. It can play "London Calling" as your ringtone.

Audrey posted scans of her paintings for the Disquieting Muses show. They're all intensely beautiful, and she's taking an informal vote on which of the latest paintings should be made into prints--my favorites are "Chelsea and Boy" (pictured) and "Mia and Mai."

Also check out Lori Earley's eerie paintings from the same show, over at the Copro Nason Gallery.
